1. Declutter First. Even before you start packing, make an effort to declutter your old space and get rid of things you don’t want to take with you into your new home. You can also declutter while you pack by having a “to donate” box handy at all times. If it doesn’t belong in your new home, donate it now instead!
2. Start Packing Early. Don’t wait until the last minute to start randomly throwing things in boxes. Your future self will thank you if you take the time now to get organized. Remember that it almost always takes you longer to pack than anticipated, so start earlier than you plan to.
3. Label Boxes – and be specific. Label each box you fill with both the room it should go in at your new location and the major contents of that box. For example, label a box full of dishes as “Kitchen – cups and silverware.” Labelling with this type of specificity will save you time and money when you need to find the essentials while unpacking.
4. Keep Valuables & Essential Tools with You. Take some stress out of your move by keeping your valuable items and important documents on your person. Also, keep essential tools such as a hammer and screwdriver with you or in a conspicuous space. Nothing is worse than needing to put together furniture so you can unpack boxes, but not knowing which box contains your screwdriver.
